What is INSOMNIA?

Insomnia is described by sleep specialists as trouble in falling asleep and retaining sleep, which has continued for a few weeks. This Chronic insomnia could last for years, while intermittent insomnia can be triggered by particular anxieties or crises.

Insomnia cannot be measured by the number of hours you sleep, since people's needs vary so much. It's been found in sleep laboratories that some insomniacs actually sleep longer than normal sleepers: if you need ten hours and only sleep for eight, then you won't feel as refreshed as the good sleeper who needs seven

Different types of insomnia have traditionally been related to different states of mind; it's frequently said that not being able to get off to sleep at night is a symptom of anxiety, while waking early is a sign of depression. Actually, it's not as simple as that. Some anxious and depressed people actually sleep more, presumably in an effort to escape from their feelings. Some depressed people cannot get off to sleep, and some anxious people fall asleep normally, but wake in the small hours.

Many sleep experts say that anger and resentment are more frequent causes of insomnia than anxiety and depression. Others suggest that the over-active, churning mind may not be a cause of insomnia, but a result.

In addition, there is often more than on factor involved; an over-active mind may be related to an under-active body, for example.

Are you insomniac?

Real insomnia has an effect to your performance and daily life. Therefore, if you feel that you don't sleep very well, but you are not so tired during the next day, you are not true insomniac. Becasue real insomniac is a person who suffering from night-time wakefulness, feeling sleepy, tiring throughout the day, which directly affeting your concentration, memory and ability to work

However, worrying about your sleeplessness can be just as stressful as not sleeping. If you fail into any of the categories below, you may be worrying unnecessarily:

Ageing: Many elderly people find themselves waking in the early hours of the morning and misdiagnose themselves, or are misdiagnosed, as insomniac.

Shift work changedThis is an artificial cause of body clock disturbance. Most people who have to go to bed in the morning and sleep till mid afternoon take a week or ten days to adapt to the new pattern.

You don't need to sleep 8 hours:Some people are brought up on the idea that eight hours is essential,m when they perhaps only need five. Some experts believe that around six hours is more than enoung for mental health; any sleep after that is 'optional sleep'. Convinced they haven't had enough sleep, they may lie in the mornings to catch up, which simply compounds the problem.

From a research, there are approximately 20 percent of people on earth who sleep six or less than six hours per night, and result from the research shows that adults function well with as little as three hours per night. There is some research to show that sleep too much can lead people to feel lethargic.
